Blacksonville.com Exclusive Interview with Stephanie Mills
"Born For This" by Bridgette Hogan

Each of us comes here marked for a particular destiny. I have been taught this for as long as I can remember. In fact, my over active imagination would envision God standing at the head of a makeshift assembly line touching the hearts of each and every soul and whispering sweetly to them what they are to become. In the ear of one he might say, “ You are a teacher. Go teach.” In the ears of another he might say, “You are a doctor. Go heal.” And then there are some souls he would come to and just pause. I can see him standing there, scratching his head, wanting to make just the right decision. After careful deliberation, he would touch their soul and say, “You are a star. Go shine.” Read magazine after magazine and every star will tell you that being in the limelight is not an easy thing. In fact, I am certain that many would warn wannabe stars that not everyone is born for the stage. But a bright and shining star will fall on our city on February 27, 2004. Singer extraordinaire, Stephanie Mills will be the special guest artist at Edward Waters College 5th Annual Fine Arts Scholarship Benefit. Ms. Mills has just released her new single “Can’t Let Him Go” from the upcoming album “Born for This” and is excited about the opportunity to come and help EWC earn money. I had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Mills about the upcoming event and she offered some valuable advice for the students of EWC. There are three things they should keep in mind in order to succeed: “Know what you want, stay close to God, and plan for your future.” And I have to say that is awesome advice from someone that has been proven able to withstand the test of time and weather all of life’s storms gracefully.

Because I remember Stephanie from way back, I couldn’t help but be in awe of such a talented artist. I was stuttering on the phone and acting all crazy. I know she was like, “Who is this chick?” But I gathered myself and by the end of the conversation I’d relaxed enough to try and be a little nosey. Was she married or single? Where did she live? It was hard not to ask prying questions. Enquiring minds do indeed want to know. But Sistergirl wasn’t giving up no scoop. It’s all good though. I was able to find out that the new cd will be a composition of “all her old stuff, just better.” Ms. Mills is definitely a legend, a diva in her own right. And on the night of February 27, 2004, every person in the Moran Theater will know exactly why God touched her soul and told her she was a star. Plain and simple, she was Born for This. Ya feel Me?
