“A Slave Ship Speaks”: The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie
Exhibit Extended through
June 22, 2003
In response to requests from the public to visit the Ritz Theatre &
La Villa Museum's presentation, "A Slave Ship Speaks: The Wreck of the
Henrietta Marie", the exhibit has been extended through June 22, 2003.
Developed by the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society and featuring an
array of artifacts salvaged from a slave ship which sank off the Florida
Keys in 1700, this exhibit retraces the last Voyage of the Henrietta
Marie. It's route took it from the port of London to the West Coast of
Africa and then on to European sugar plantations in the Caribbean
Islands. Through objects, video, graphics, text and interactive
features, the exhibit provides not only a history lesson, but examines
the impact of slavery on our lives today. Record numbers of visitors
ranging from elementary school students to senior citizens have come
through the museum since the exhibit opened on
January 26.
"The additional two months will enable us to schedule field trips for
area summer camp programs and to be a destination for summer travelers",
says Museum Administrator Lydia Stewart. "We have some excellent
volunteer museum guides who have received special training to assist
with tours. With their help, we're able to handle the increased
traffic."
Reservations are required for group tours. Call 904-632-5555 for more
information.
