 2010 ORATORICAL COMPETITION
THEME: CHALLENGE! CHOICE! CHANGE!
Africans arrived in captivity on the shores of the America’s over 450 years ago. Continually, decade after decade, the challenges were many, the choices were few and the changes were perpetual. Notwithstanding the prior 400 years struggles and accomplishments, the challenge over the past fifty years 1960-2010 for African Americans to confront racist attitudes and policies specifically focused on a movement towards political, economic, social and educational equality in North America. The choices to orchestrate effective political and social change were manifested in the activities which mobilized the people through freedom marches, sit-ins, voter’s registration, re-education and re-identification to name a few. The changes which have occurred over the past fifty years are the results of the challenges that were faced and the choices that were made.
Each contestant’s presentation should address the historical and cultural perspective of the transformations over the past fifty years for African Americans using the theme Challenge! Choice! Change!. The contestant may identify one or several individual(s), organization(s), policy, event(s) or cultural movement that speaks to challenge, choice and change over the past fifty years.
